ZEISS IDEA Finalist

The ZEISS C-UVProtect was recognized as an International Design Excellence Award Finalist.

September 17, 2020 (CHAPEL HILL, NC) - On September 16 at the Industrial Designers Society of America IDEA Awards Ceremony, Trig’s collaborative product design with Voxelight LLC for the ZEISS C-UVProtect was recognized as an Award Finalist. This marks the fifth IDEA award Trig has received for their work on client projects.

The ZEISS C-UVProtect tablet is a powerful, handheld, point-of-sale device that allows users to see the level of UV protection provided by various optical lenses. This clinical visualization tool allows customers to effectively compare the UV blocking capabilities of competing lenses as they view them, in real-time, on the tablet screen in order to make more informed purchasing decisions.

Ultraviolet radiation is always present and prolonged UV exposure poses potential health risks. Most people are aware of potential skin damage but are unaware of the harm that UV exposure has on the eyes throughout the year. Two years ago, ZEISS released ZEISS UVProtect Technology in all clear ZEISS lenses, providing wearers with sunglass-level UV protection at all times. Many competing lenses do not have this same level of protection, but the harmful UV rays are invisible and the protection they provide cannot be seen naturally.

The ZEISS C-UVProtect tablet effectively makes lens protection visible to aid in purchasing evaluations. Through the novel combination of AI technology with an advanced optical array, the tablet is able to provide a visual representation of whether lenses provide full UV protection or not. A user can visualize themselves in real-time on the tablet’s screen, with an augmented black-and-white image showing areas with sustained sun damage as well as if UV rays are blocked by their lenses - whether clear or tinted.

This technology was first used in Sunscreenr, a compact viewer that allows consumers to see the full application of their sunscreen after it has been applied. The ZEISSC-UVProtect tablet, however, advances this technology of visualizing UV ray protection into a more accessible sales tool. Customers can more easily understand if their eyes need more protection by viewing the effectiveness of competing lenses at an optometry office or eyewear point of sale. For the first time, people are able to visualize the invisible light being blocked by the lenses they purchase— even clear lenses such as ones with ZEISS UVProtect Technology.
